In the new concert season, on October 18 at 18:00, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra invites you to a special musical meeting with violinist Elīna Bukša and conductor Paul Mann at the “Lielais dzintars” Liepāja Concert Hall. The concert programme features music by the most brilliant British composers, as well as Robert Schumann’s uplifting Symphony No 2.

This Liepāja Symphony Orchestra's concert will be a magnificent fusion of British refinement and German Romanticism, intertwining history, individuality, and the timeless power of music.

The successful solo career of the Grand Music Award winner, violinist Elīna Bukša, attracting the attention of both critics and the public, has flourished throughout Europe after her debut at the age of 12 with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra. Her performances are marked by both technical mastery and emotional intensity, which is also highlighted in prestigious 'Gramophone' reviews: “Elīna Bukša deserves praise, as her performance never disappoints. Her interpretation is full of fierce energy and dazzling passages. The violinist carefully and attentively leads the listener to the thrilling conclusion.”

This time, Elīna Bukša will perform with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra the emotionally charged, orchestrally expressive and structurally unusual Violin Concerto written by Benjamin Britten, who is one of the key figures in 20th-century British classical music. In this opus, the moods of the era’s turmoil intertwine with the violinist’s inner world – this is where the sensitive interpretation of the concert’s soloist Elīna Bukša promises especially emotional tension.

The collaboration between the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and British conductor Paul Mann has lasted for ten years, and, under the auspices of the record label 'Toccata,' many works by British composers have been recorded together. The orchestra has recorded many works by British composers such as Derek B. Scott, Mischa Spoliansky, David Hackbridge Johnson, Charles O'Brien, Arnold Griller, and others. Although collaboration has been close and long-lasting, this will be the first time Paul Mann conducts the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra in a concert. Under his direction the concert will also feature Edward Elgar’s Serenade for strings and Robert Schumann’s Symphony No 2.

Considered a typical English composer, Elgar dedicated his early Serenade for strings to his wife on their third wedding anniversary, and it is also his favorite piece. The composer was pleased with how “string-like” it turned out – after all, Elgar was also a violinist.

The Symphony No 2 of the remarkable German composer Robert Schumann is one of the composer’s most notable works. During the composition of the symphony, Schumann struggled with both physical and mental health issues; however, the uplifting tone of the piece became a testament to inner strength and hope. The symphony reminds us of the ability to strive for light even in moments of personal darkness.
