On July 29, the International Trombone Festival will open with a grand concert at the Riga Latvian Society House, which for the first time in its history will take place not only in Latvia, but throughout Eastern Europe.
At the festival's opening concert, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, together with world-famous trombonist, conductor and composer Christian Lindberg, and two other internationally recognized soloists – French-born British-Swiss trombonist Sophie Rebecca Bright and Norwegian trombonist Line Johannesen – will perform a program dedicated to the expressive possibilities and versatility of the trombone.
The program opens with Lindberg's vibrant orchestral work “Tarantula,” followed by Jan Sandström's “Echoes of Eternity,” a concerto for two trombones featuring acclaimed soloists Line Johannesen and Sophie Rebecca Bright.
Lindberg then takes center stage as soloist in his own Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, “El Poder de la Vida,” showcasing the instrument's extraordinary lyricism and virtuosity.
The evening concludes with Carl Nielsen's monumental Symphony No. 5, a powerful and deeply human work that stands among the masterpieces of the twentieth-century orchestral repertoire.
The International Trombone Festival, organized by International Trombone Association and Vairis Nartišs as this year's festival host, is an annual multi-day event dedicated to the trombone in all its aspects. It combines concerts, master classes, lectures, competitions and exhibitions. The festival is held in a different location around the world each year. It is mostly held in the United States, but is also regularly organized in other countries.
