On a summer evening in Liepāja, three outstanding artists—three equal soloists—come together for a chamber-music programme. They will offer listeners a richly coloured and rhythmically sparkling journey, from Szymanowski’s poetic Myths to the tension of Bartók’s modernism and Schoenfield’s scintillating klezmer themes.

The concert will feature the world premiere of Ilona Breģe’s Clarinet Sonata.

Ilona Breģe is one of the most distinctive voices in Latvian contemporary music. Her works have been performed by the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra of the Latvian National Opera, Sinfonietta Rīga, Kremerata Baltica, as well as by conductors Andris Nelsons, Ainārs Rubiķis, Andris Poga, Normunds Šnē, and others.

As the composer puts it, she is not afraid to be emotional in her music. She is drawn to the very moment of creation—this is how she finds her balance again and clears her thoughts as her experience of the outside world transforms into music. Then she feels strong again.

Karol Szymanowski’s Myths for violin and piano is a set of three poems that draw the listener into images of the ancient world. The Fountain of ArethusaNarcissus, and Dryads and Pan are not a narrative programme with a precise sequence of events, but rather a cycle of moods and symbols, where shimmering light on water, a lyrical contemplation of self-reflection, and a dance-like impulse intertwine in a subtle, colourful play of timbres.

Béla Bartók’s Contrasts is a series of virtuosic dialogues inspired by Hungarian and Balkan folk music, in which the characteristic “triangle” of clarinet, violin, and piano becomes a laboratory of rhythm and temperament. Here, contrasts are heard both in clashing characters and in a finely balanced ensemble texture—shifting from meditative flow to a swift, dance-like whirl.

In Paul Schoenfield’s work, the klezmer tradition appears not merely as a quotation, but as a living impulse: sparkling rhythms, “speaking” inflections, and theatrical expressivity, alternating with lyrical episodes. Schoenfield skilfully merges academic craftsmanship with the freedom of folk music, leaving room for the ensemble’s spontaneity and a flash of humour as well.
