On January 29 at 19:00, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra will begin a new concert series SYMPHONY CLOSER (TUVĀK), where you will be able to get to know the cornerstones of the world’s symphonic repertoire free of charge via live stream from the Liepaja Concert Hall “Great Amber”.

Back in the summer, Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the State Culture Capital Foundation, started a new series of concert conversations CLOSER (TUVĀK) with the aim of bringing the listener closer to the orchestra’s musicians, by showing them in conversations and music, which, as recognized by music reviewer Orests Silabriedis, sometimes comes with really great surprises. This series has already gained the recognition of listeners with 15 broadcasts and is planned to be continued.
The successful example of getting closer to the audience led the orchestra to expanding the range of topics covered, and a new series has been created - Symphony CLOSER, which will introduce the audience to beautiful, classical symphonies which everyone should know.
“Symphony is one of the most concise, spacious and beautiful forms that the humanity provides its message in. The spirit of the era, the advancement of society and deeply personal revelations are simultaneously miraculously manifested in masterpieces that have outlasted their time and become a part of the world’s cultural heritage,” says Uldis Lipskis, the conductor of the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra. “Generations are changing, and the symphony, which the European society has known and loved for more than two hundred years, is slowly shrouded in the dust of oblivion. There are fewer and fewer people who come to concerts with scores. There are fewer and fewer of those who are able to compare dozens of different interpretations of the same symphony and for whom the message of music, history, literature, philosophy, painting and architecture is intertwined in a full and intelligent sense of the world.”
Before the symphony, music reviewer Orests Silabriedis and the conductor of the concert program will together reveal the context of the symphony’s creation time and structural details of the masterpiece, but after the symphony is played, Timurs Tomsons, general manager of the Concert Hall “Great Amber”, will hold a conversation, in which specially invited regular listeners of the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, who we know as never-absent guests in all of our concerts, will share the experience from their musical adventure.
The first meeting with the symphony will take place on January 29 at 19:00 - the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Guntis Kuzma, will play Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in sol minor, which is a popular masterpiece from the classical era and full of dynamic ideas. On February 19, Normunds Šnē will conduct Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No. 3. On March 12, the chief conductor of Liepāja Symphony Orchestra Gintaras Rinkevicius will be the one conducting the Symphony No.9 by Antonin Dvorak. But on April 9, we will get closer to Peter Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, which will be interpreted by the erudite professor and conductor Andris Vecumnieks.
