This summer in Liepāja - an opera gala concert

In the fullness of Liepāja's short summer, when the sunlight tempts you to go outside and enjoy the warmth and light, accumulating joy for the autumn and winter months full of melancholic moods, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra will once again invite music lovers to come together in the renovated Liepāja Concert Garden “Pūt, vējini!”.

The tradition to organise symphonic concerts is an integral sign of Liepāja's cultural identity. The authorities, the city itself, the stages built for open-air concerts have changed through the years, however, the practice of enjoying music on summer evenings surrounded by the breath of the sea, keeps coming back into the rhythm of life of our city spirit.

On July 15 at 19:00 in the upcoming opera music concert to be held in the Concert Garden “Pūt, vējini!”, the audience will enjoy famous opera overtures, arias and ensemble performances.

The charming French soprano Perrine Madoeuf, the charismatic tenor, owner of a brilliant voice Mikhail Chulpaev, and the gentle Romanian baritone Bogdan Baciu will take the open-air stage accompanied by the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra.

The outstanding Azerbaijani conductor Yalchin Adigezalov, who has already given concerts together with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra before, will take the place at the conductor's desk. They have also recorded a CD of symphonic mughams together ten years ago. The basics of Azerbaijani classical music – mugham – is the classical folk music of the Middle East, which is based on very strict rules and can be compared to the Indian raga.

Perrine Madoeuf is a multiple award winner of international opera singers’ competitions (at Placido Domingo’s “Operalia” in Verona, and also in Barcelona, Marseille and elsewhere). Her versatile repertoire includes such roles as Susanna and the Countess (“The Marriage of Figaro”), Donna Anna and Donna Elvira (“Don Juan”), Violetta (“La Traviata”), Gilda (“Rigoletto”), Margaret (“Faust”), Juliet (“Romeo and Juliet”), Micaela (“Carmen”), Anna (“Nabucco”) and other roles in operas and operettas.

Mikhail Chulpaev has excellently proven himself as a soloist of the Latvian National Opera for several seasons, by brilliantly proving his unusual talent in a diverse repertoire both in terms of vocals and acting skills. In 2015 he was nominated for the Grand Music Award in the category “Young Artist of the Year”, and in 2017 he won the annual award of the Latvian National Opera Foundation in the category “Best Opera Soloist”.

Romanian baritone Bogdan Baciu made his Royal Opera House debut this season, playing the role of Marcel in Giacomo Puccini's La Bohème. Baciu is a frequent guest in opera performances and opera music concerts in many European countries: Germany, France, Italy, Lithuania and his native land Romania.

Tickets for the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra concerts can be purchased at “Biļešu paradīze” ticket offices.

The Concert is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, the State Cultural Capital Foundation and Liepāja City.
