This autumn, the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra invites audiences to Rundāle Palace for an encounter with three great masters of the Viennese Classical tradition: Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. Each left a unique and lasting mark on the history of music, and on this evening, listeners will embark on a fascinating journey through three distinct yet interconnected musical worlds, ranging from nobility and magnanimity to the power of human emotion and the joy of harmonious living.
The evening will open with the overture to Mozart’s opera La clemenza di Tito. The composer wrote it during the final months of his life, and at its heart is the Roman emperor Titus, whose wisdom, magnanimity, and capacity for forgiveness form the work’s central message. The overture introduces the listener to a world where the majesty of the ruler, human passions, and twists of fate converge. This music is marked by the balance and elegance characteristic of Classicism, while also pulsing with an exciting, distinctly Mozartian energy.
While Mozart’s music is dominated by nobility and harmony, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 brings the individual human spirit to the forefront.
It is one of the most remarkable works of the composer’s early mature period, still retaining the elegance of the Viennese Classical style while already revealing Beethoven’s independent and boldly innovative voice. Here, the composer expands the boundaries of the piano concerto, transforming it into a compelling dialogue between soloist and orchestra.
The nuances of Beethoven’s musical world will be revealed by Lithuanian pianist Kasparas Uinskas, whose performance will allow listeners to experience the dramatic and emotional depth of this outstanding concerto.
The third great master of the Viennese Classical tradition represented in the programme is Joseph Haydn. His Symphony No. 104, widely known as the ‘London’ Symphony, is the composer’s final symphony and, at the same time, a brilliant culmination of his symphonic output. It brings together solemnity and humour, elegance and joie de vivre. From its impressive introduction to its triumphant finale, the symphony impresses with its wealth of melody and energy, which, more than two centuries after its creation, has lost none of its charm. This music is imbued with a special sense of humanity — joy in life, wisdom, and sparkling vitality.
