Maija Kovaļevska in the Stars Festival

The world-acclaimed Latvian opera diva Maija Kovaļevska will perform in two concerts of the 28th Liepaja International Stars Festival – in an exclusive chamber music concert on 13 March at 7 p.m., in Liepāja Concert Hall “Great Amber”, and in the festival gala concert on 14 March at 6 p.m., together with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra.

“These concerts will fulfil my long-cherished dream to perform with the sophisticated virtuoso pianist Armands Ābols. I truly admire Armand's passion and perseverance, his musical intelligence and technique. In addition, it is not often that close relatives perform together. We are close not only as relatives but also in our understanding of music,” says opera singer Maija Kovaļevska.

On March 13, the Stars Festival invites to enjoy Maija Kovalevska's singing in a cosy atmosphere similar to that of the salon music concerts of the 19th century, where musicians and audience are in close proximity and on the same emotional page. Maija will sing the beautiful and contemplative songs by Lūcija Garūta and Jānis Mediņš. The program will feature pianist Armands Ābols, Latvian virtuoso and professor residing in Chile. The pianist will give a solo performance of Chopin’s popular nocturnes (night music) Opus 9, and a selection of Schumann’s “Children’s Scenes”. The Riga Chamber Choir AVE SOL male group will enrich the programme with Franz Shubert’s undeservedly rarely performed choir songs that range from idyllic scenes to sacral experience and back to party songs.

In the gala concert of the 28th Liepāja International Stars Festival on March 14, Maija Kovaļevska will sing with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra under the conductor Atvars Lakstīgala. "We will continue our successful collaboration," says Maija who recently recorded her first solo album with the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra and Atvars Lakstīgala right here − in the Concert Hall “GREAT AMBER”. The audience will hear the longing aria of the opera singer Floria Toska, the fragile story of Spanish girl Mikaela and of Parisian seamstress Mimi, and will have an opportunity to admire the orchestral colours and scope in the Overture to Verdi’s opera “Sicilian Vesper”, in scenes from Bizet’s “Carmen” and in Puccini’s quietly contemplative miniature “Chrysanthemums”.

Armands Ābols will play one of the most beautiful examples of the genre − Piano Concerto No. 4 by Ludwig van Beethoven − in celebration of the composer’s anniversary. Musicologist Orests Silabriedis states that Armands Ābols' intelligent, manly, considerate and refined approach is perfectly suited for this brilliant concerto.

The five concerts from 7‒14 March of the 28th Liepāja International Stars Festival organised by Liepāja Symphony Orchestra will feature exceptional musicians from Brazil, Chile, Portugal, France, Czechia, Lithuania and Latvia, and will take place in Liepāja Concert Hall “Great Amber”.

Tickets to the Festival concerts (from 10 EUR) can be purchased in all Box-Offices of “Biļešu paradise” and at The 28th Liepāja International Stars Festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, the State Culture Capital Foundation and the city of Liepāja.
