The unique amber sound of the Orchestra has originated in a unique place at the Baltic Sea – in Liepāja.
On 8 March at 6 p.m. in Liepāja Concert Hall “GREAT AMBER”, the 28th Liepāja International Stars Festival will feature Latvian Radio Big Band with Portuguese jazz diva Maria Mendes and sensational Brazilian bass guitarist Michael Pipoquinha.
Maria Mendes is a Portuguese singer with a wide range of musical interests – she feels perfectly at home in jazz, tenderly sings popular music and can turn her clear strong voice into a melancholic one in fadu. Mendes has performed at the legendary New York Blue Note Jazz Club and has been cheered by the audience at Montreux Jazz Festival. Michael Pipoquinha, who has been in Latvia several times, already as a teenager charmed thousands of followers of his video channel around the world by his technical virtuosity. Presently the young musician is out for the world fame. Michael’s performance is rich in colourful Brazilian rhythms, unique slapping technique and ferocious grooves. The Standard Bank Jazz Festival has called him a sensational bassist.
The audience will hear Portuguese and Brazilian music, enjoy Maria and Michael’s duo and the programme Tribute to Jaco dedicated to the legendary American bassist Jaco Pastorius, which will be played by Michael and the Latvian Radio Big Band.
“We will perform the songs celebrating the Portuguese language and Brazilian rhythms. I am proud that with these shows, Latvian Radio Big Band and I will be showing that Brazilian music is more than samba and Jobim’s bossa nova,“ says Maria Mendes.
The five concerts from 7‒14 March of the 28th Liepāja International Stars Festival organised by Liepāja Symphony Orchestra will feature exceptional musicians from Brazil, Chile, Portugal, France, Czechia, Lithuania and Latvia, and will take place in Liepāja Concert Hall “Great Amber”.
