Orchestra on concert tour in February

In February, Liepāja Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Guntis Kuzma with a special concert programme will embark on a tour to a number of Latvian towns, and to Klaipeda, a town of Latvia’s neighbouring country. The focus of the programme is on jazz!

The popular jazzmen of Latvia – saxophonist Gints Pabērzs, bassist Edvins Ozols and percussion artist Artis Orubs will join the ensemble of the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra.
Album Focus of American composer of the swing era Eddie Sauter was released in 1962. It was commissioned and recorded by the outstanding American tenor saxophonist Stan Getz.

At the musician’s request, the composer did not entrust the leading themes to string orchestra leaving this function to the soloist. It allowed for wide expression of Getz’s talent of bright lyric improvisation. The seven compositions included in the album, which will be played by the Liepāja Symphony Orchestra together with the jazz trio of Gints Pabērzs, Edvīns Ozols and Artis Orubs, will create an atmosphere of seven different moods. It will be a fusion of academic and jazz music; two different genres complementing each other – jazz acquiring deeper artistic meaning and the academic element becoming lively and saturated with energetic emotions.

The programme will also feature the music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - delightful and graceful Divertimento in D major, and five Country Dances written for the court of Joseph II, as well as the suite “From Holberg’s time” by the famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, which alongside the fresh and energetic prelude, and melancholic aria includes the dances of the 18th century – quiet and melodious Sarabande, stately Gavotte, and the concluding, boisterous and energetic Rigaudon.

This is what conductor Guntis Kuzma has to say on the concert programme of the tour: “Since my childhood, Mozart has been one of my favourite composers; his Divertimento is a wonderful piece of refined musical entertainment. Mozart’s emotions were close also to Grieg; suite “From Holberg’s Time”, dedicated to the witty Danish playwright Ludwig Holberg, fits well in this programme. It will also be a real pleasure to collaborate with the three best musicians in their genre in Latvia. Gints Pabērzs’ improvisation skills and instantly recognizable sound, Edvīns Ozols’ ardour and Artis Orub’s phenomenal virtuosity will give a completely new character to Edie Sauter’s music and to the famous Stan Getz’s album Focus.

The concerts will take place on 5 February in Klaipeda, on 8 February in Talsi, on 15 February in the new Dobele Concert Hall ”Zinta”, on 22 February in Tukums and on 27 February in Priekule.
